If needed, Summit Stoke can provide all technical equipment for climbing (boots, harness, helmet, crampons and ice-axe). It is included in the price of our beginner experiences, but will have an extra cost if wanted for our Intermediate and Advanced Experiences. We always recommend that you bring your own equipment if you already own some!
Once you arrive in Quito and have been transferred to your hotel, we suggest that you take a nap for a few hours or rest. Avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water (not from the tap). Also make sure that you get enough sugar – we suggest eating dark chocolate, which is produced locally in Ecuador.
Of course, you can! The groups for our trips are a mix of climbers from all over the world with the same passion and desire for climbing high mountains as yours.
No problem! Just let us know prior to departure and preferably in the booking form for our experiences, and we will make sure to cater to your needs.
Acclimatization is very important and should be taken seriously. Even if you are in a great physical condition, the acclimatization is crucial for a successful climb. Acclimatization is about gradually adjusting your body to the lack of oxygen in the high altitudes. If you attempt high mountains too early in the process it could have serious consequences concerning your health. All of our mountain climbing experiences are carefully planned around proper acclimatization processes starting with medium peaks and slowly working their way towards the high peaks.
If you don’t acclimatize properly, then yes you can. Altitude sickness is the effect of altitude on those who ascent too rapidly to elevations above 3.000 meters and it is not related to your fitness level or age. The early symptoms are headaches, loss of appetite and sleeplessness. These symptoms SHOULD NOT be ignored. Go slowly and listen to your body. If you have any symptoms at all, tell the guide and he/she will assist you.
We recommend eating light and healthy. Carbohydrates are very important for the body’s energy reserves. So, foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and fresh fruits are the best sources.
Try not to eat red meat the days before the climb, as it takes a long time to digest. This is a problem, as digestion gets much slower and difficult in the altitude. Drink 2-3 liters of water daily. All of our meals included in our tours are planned according to the activities.
Yes, all of our guides work with radios in the mountains. They are connected with a rescue team and the mountain refuge.

Technical equipment is included in our Beginner Experiences, but we do recommend that you bring your own equipment if you already own it. The reason is that it’s always better to use the equipment that you are used to and familiar with.
High mountains require that you climb with an experienced and licensed guide (National Park rules). For medium altitude mountains it is highly recommended that you hire a guide as it gets very foggy and easy to get lost. We work with the best professional and licensed guides.
To join our trips, you must be in excellent physical shape no matter the level of the trip. Mountaineering is hard work with summit-days varying between 8-12 hours of continuous effort.
So, it is very important that you are honest with yourself in your assessment of your physical level. Consistent training months in advance of the departure date is of utmost importance. We are happy to help with any questions regarding this and can also supply a training-program if desired. Just let us know!
We run our set expeditions with anywhere from 2-10 participants.
Yes, you do! In order to participate in any of Summit Stoke’s experiences it is a requirement that participants purchase an (or several) insurance(s) which cover not only private travel, but also high-altitude mountaineering (e.g. helicopter rescue, field rescue and evacuation above 20,000 feet), as well as covid-19 medical coverage.
It is not mandatory, but common practice in Ecuador that the groups collect a total tip of around 5-10% of the total trip cost in order to share with their guides.
Always consult your doctor before traveling. However, we recommend that participants get vaccinations against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus and Yellow Fever (if you’re planning on visiting the Amazon region) before departure.
Ecuador welcomes visitors from most countries for 90 days, issuing a T3 visa stamp upon arrival. However, it is the sole responsibility of the participant to check whether any visa regulations apply to their nationality and to acquire such visa prior to departure. It is also the sole responsibility of the participant to ensure that the participant’s passport has a validity of at least 6 months from their entry date in Ecuador.
