In the world of mountaineering, where breathtaking landscapes meet daring adventures, the call for responsible and sustainable practices reverberates louder than ever. It’s essential to adopt practices that preserve the environment for generations to come. ‘Leave No Trace’ principles serve as a compass for responsible mountaineering. This post will dive into some general tips for Leave No Trace Mountaineering as well as elaborating on the topic by explaining Summit Stoke’s unique approach to sustainable mountaineering expeditions. At Summit Stoke, our commitment transcends merely offering exhilarating climbing experiences in Ecuador. We’re dedicated to forging a profound connection with nature while leaving a positive impact on the environment and local people. Join us on a journey where the ascent isn’t merely physical; it’s mindful, ethical, and eco-conscious.

Embracing Sustainability and ‘Leave No Trace’ in Mountaineering

Sustainable mountaineering isn’t just a concept; it’s a philosophy harmonizing exploration with preservation. It’s about embracing ethical principles that minimize environmental impact, ensuring landscapes remain pristine for future generations of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. At Summit Stoke, these principles are more than ideals; they are integral to every expedition, enriching the experience responsibly.

General Tips for Leave No Trace Mountaineering

1. Plan and Prepare with Care

  • Plan your route thoughtfully, respecting fragile ecosystems and wildlife habitats.
  • Pack essential gear while minimizing waste. Choose reusable items to reduce environmental impact.

2. Respect Wildlife and Nature

  • Observe wildlife from a distance and avoid disturbing their natural behavior.
  • Stay on designated trails to prevent erosion and protect sensitive flora.

3. Proper Waste Disposal

  • Carry out all trash and dispose of it properly in designated areas.
  • Consider carrying a small bag to collect litter left behind by others, leaving areas cleaner than you found them.
  • Bury solid human waste in holes of at least 6-8 inches of depth at least 200 feet away from water sources, trails and campsites. Toilet paper and hygiene products must always be packed out.
  • For personal hygiene use biodegradable soap and always make sure to wash yourselves, dishes etc. at least 200 feet away from lakes and streams.

4. Leave Natural Objects Undisturbed

  • Refrain from picking flowers, moving rocks, or altering the natural landscape.
  • Minimize campfire impact; use existing fire rings and ensure fires are fully extinguished.

Now, let’s delve into Summit Stoke’s approach, embodying ‘Sustainable Mountaineering’ and ‘Leave No Trace’ principles in every expedition.

Our Approach to Ethical Expeditions and Sustainable Mountaineering

With a steadfast commitment to sustainability in all of its facets it is not only the ‘Leave No Trace,’ principle that characterizes our mountaineering expeditions, but also the social aspect of sustainability. Here’s how we seamlessly integrate ethical practices:

Meticulous Planning and Preparation

Before any journey, meticulous planning is paramount. We conduct thorough assessments to minimize our environmental footprint, selecting routes that preserve delicate ecosystems while respecting local flora and fauna.

Leave No Trace Principles in Action

Throughout our expeditions, we unwaveringly adhere to the Leave No Trace principles: from proper waste disposal to wildlife respect. Our guides instill these values, ensuring our adventures leave minimal disturbance in natural surroundings. All Summit Stoke guides care deeply for our beloved Andes and will always pick up any waste that they might encounter on their way along any expedition as long as it doesn’t compromise the safety of the team.

Environmental Education and Awareness

Education is a catalyst for change. We offer comprehensive training, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship. By raising awareness, we empower climbers to be sustainability advocates while also leveling up their climbing skills in stunning surroundings.

Yoga, Breathwork, and Harmonizing with Nature

Our trips aren’t just about summit conquests; they’re about holistic growth. Integrating yoga and breathwork as well as ancient Andean practices into our expeditions allow participants to connect deeply with nature in the Andes. These practices promote mindfulness and spiritual alignment, fostering profound respect for the environment.

Empowering Women in Mountaineering: Our Social Commitment

At Summit Stoke we believe that the best travel experiences occur, when they also benefit the people who live in the places we visit. Estimates from 2018 indicate that only 1,5% of IFMGA Mountain Guides are women and that percentage is even smaller in Latin America with only one internationally certified female guide in all of Ecuador to take an example. We want to help change this reality towards more equality through a pioneering travel business model built up around the beautiful practice that is mountaineering. Social responsibility is intrinsic to our mission and so, our forthcoming NGO, supported by a percentage of Summit Stoke profits and sponsors, will support local women in Ecuador. We will offer free mountaineering trips and courses, nurturing aspirations among female climbers while also providing future scholarships which will pave the way for women to become internationally certified mountain guides, empowering their education, careers and lives.
